The Flying School is a newly converted luxury
2 bedroom holiday accommodation in what was once a chapel.
The building is over 200 years old and was the Relief church
of Burnhead. It has also been used as a furniture store, joinery
workshop, pig sty and former dance hall where many local couples
met. We have met many local people who met their respective
partners there, and all have happy memories of the regular Saturday
night dances.
The building was a church until at least 1908 when the then
Reverend James Crammond died at the manse next door, he is buried
in Penpont churchyard one mile away.
When we moved into the property in 2004 the remaining unconverted
section, which is now The Flying School, was a vast empty shell
and was populated by swallows, that had nested in the eaves
and the resulting chicks would learn to fly inside the building
before venturing out. Hence the name ‘Flying School’!
