The Flying School is an ideal place to base yourselves for a relaxing break where you choose the pace of your holiday. The local area is renowned for hunting, shooting and fishing
and also some of the countries top mountain biking trails. The
Solway coast is a mere 30 miles to the West and has stunning,
spectacular scenery where you can explore on foot, bike or by
car. There are sandy bays and beaches, rocky outcrops and cliffs,
rock pools and numerous wild life including several protected
nature reserves.
Thornhill is
a pretty little town one mile from Burnhead with an impressive
tree lined main street. Thornhill is a haven for shopping with exclusive shops and boutiques….. and local hotels and cafes provide plenty of choice for eating out both during the day and
evening.
Nearby is Moniaive for arts & culture, organic café.
Dumfries lies 15 miles to the west and was the home of Scottish folk
hero Robert Burns, who lived in Dumfries from 1788 until his
death in 1796 and where he is buried in The Burns Mausoleum.
There several Burns attractions in and around Dumfries, including
The Globe Inn, Ellisland farm and The Burns Centre.
On your tour around the local countryside you may see the Andy Galsworthy ‘Striding Arches’ outdoor sculpture project.
Easy motorway access to Glasgow
(55 miles) and Edinburgh (75 miles).
Drumlanrig Castle is 3 miles along the country lane that runs outside the house.
At Drumlanrig castle and country park there are marked cycleways,
great for mountain biking, cycle hire, woodland walks, an excellent
adventure playground and plant centre as well as the house itself.
There are also a farmers market during the summer
season. In the summer you can also visit the Arts & Crafts shops in the Castle Courtyard, the Adventure playground and the gardens. They also provide land rover tours, Architectural tours, a bicycle museum and Disc Golf – one of the world’s fastest growing sports!
Further afield but still within easy access is the Solway coast where you can visit the beach,
go horse riding
or take a gentle stroll along the stunning coastline.
Half a mile from Burnhead is the River
Nith which offers excellent salmon fishing,
with permits
available locally, and riverside walks.
